William Dalgleish daybook, 1827-ca. 1902, (bulk 1827-1830).

Volume contains handwritten daily records of receipts and expenditures, accounts of schooner repairs, accounts for machine work or milling, a receipt, watercolors and pencil drawings, a draft of a letter, and penmanship exercises. Receipts and expenditures (Oct. 1827 - Dec. 1830) contain accounts with various individuals and institutions in Charleston, South Carolina including St. Michael's Episcopal Church, the Academy of Fine Arts, the Union Insurance Company, the State Bank, the Board of Fire Masters, the Charleston Theater, and First [Scots] Presbyterian Church for masonry work, roofing, whitewashing, painting, plastering, and cleaning out a privy. Accounts relating to schooners (1842), found on the back endpapers, list the number of men working each day, parts of days worked, and materials (including oak and pine) used on the schooners H. Smith and Chune [?]. Accounts (n.d.) for machine or mill work may include references to repairs made to a cotton gin. A loose receipt is dated 1845. Watercolors and drawings include renderings of steamships, sailboats, school buildings, a fire and a fire engine, a steam locomotive, individuals, and birds. The draft of a letter to "Cousin Maggie," apparently written by a child, is dated 1902.
